“We love because He first loved us.” ~ 1 John 4:19
God is a good God, a God who is Love, and He is constantly pursuing each one of us. How do we hear His voice? How do we experience His Love? How do we relate to God? How do we respond to His Love? Do we sense His presence in our daily lives–even at every moment of our lives? These are questions that are fundamental in spiritual direction.
Just this past June, Sr. Alicia and I had the opportunity to begin formation to become spiritual directors. We spent two weeks participating in intensive coursework with the Oblates of the Virgin Mary (OMVs), hosted at the Mother Cabrini Shrine in Golden, CO. This was the first of a three-summer formation program where we will develop skills and grow in an attentiveness to helping others see and experience God in their daily lives. With an emphasis on Ignatian Spirituality, we learned about how each person is a unique gift from God and is called into a unique relationship with Him. The spiritual director is invited into this relationship in order to help the individual begin, savor, and go deeper in their walk with God.
The time spent out in Golden was truly a gift for me. I am excited to start this new adventure of accompanying others in their life of prayer and in their relationship with God. Not only did I learn how to help others hear the voice of God and respond, I too was reminded of how to be a better disciple of Jesus. I gained many insights that have deepened my own prayer life and I hope to use them in my daily life as a Franciscan sister.
God is constantly seeking us. He is lavish with His Love and desires to be with us always. May Mary intercede for us as we strive to say Yes to Him and respond to His love every day, every moment of our lives.
